The quail covey are the farm's smallest residents and comfortably its busiest. There are fifteen of them — probably. Nobody has ever managed to count them twice and got the same answer, because a quail's natural state is a fast walk in a direction it has only just decided on. Together they patrol their run like a little speckled cleaning crew, hoovering up anything of interest, murmuring away to each other, and producing a steady supply of tiny, perfect, spotty eggs.
